About Merce Cunningham Studio

The Merce Cunningham Studio is committed to educating dancers at the professional level in Cunningham’s technique- repertory- and choreographic process. The Studio offers a year-round program of daily classes that emphasize strength- clarity of position- and precision in movement. It also provides support to young artists as performers and choreographers- in its offering of Workshops and opportunities to both perform and to present work. Merce Cunningham uses the term “studio” to describe the place where teaching and learning take place. He wants his technique to remain flexible- no codified. Students and dancers work in an open environment- building a firm foundation without restrictive rules associated with the term “school.” Dancers are encouraged to discover for themselves- as well as with feedback from their teachers- what they need to effect change. This clarity of mission informs all of the programs of the Studio- as the basis for making educational and artistic decisions- the basis for long-range planning- and the basis for operational decisions
