When the small guy gets injured on the job, he gets paid by filing what’s called a workman’s compensation claim. The Workman Compensation Claims Adjuster, in turn, is the Insurance Agent who evaluates this claim, making sure that the worker is duly compensated while taking care that the insurance company doesn’t get bamboozled.

Budding Matlocks will excel in this position, because quite a bit of investigation is required when settling a claim. A Workman Compensation Claims Adjuster contacts the employer and any witnesses to the accident, examines the work environment, and reviews any medical records related to the event. If the circumstances surrounding the claim require it, the Workman Compensation Claims Adjuster also consults with various experts in order to make a fair decision.

Once the research is done, an offer of payment is made. Then you go through the process of negotiation—after all, does anyone ever really accept the first offer? You participate in some sort of tennis match with the claimant or the claimant’s Attorney, tossing offers back and forth until you either agree on a settlement or decide to litigate.

A negotiation can get rough, so it goes without saying that you have to be good at it. In addition, it wouldn’t really help if you’re the peace pipe-smoking, sensitive type. This job requires a pit bull’s grit because ultimately, your objective is to do everything you can to stay within the financial limits set by your insurance company.
