A Water Systems Operator oversees the distribution of water throughout a municipality or county. The distribution of water throughout an entire city is a big undertaking. It includes installing and maintaining water pipes, filtering water to remove impurities, testing chemical levels, and ensuring delivery to consumers.

Water Systems Operators supervise approved projects such as reservoirs, water mains, water towers, treatment facilities, etc. to ensure that they conform to regulations. Once built, you — the Water Systems Operator — inspect and test systems checking for leaks or cracks that may allow contaminants into the water supply. If you find damage, you supervise the required repairs. As you are spending the public’s money in all of these endeavors, you must keep detailed records of maintenance, repairs, and costs. In addition to expenditures, you inform and respond to public concerns over the availability and quality of water.

As per state and federal water quality regulations, you make sure the water system is disinfected and tested, according to an outlined maintenance schedule. You also ensure that the water moving through the pipes is clean and safe for drinking. This is often done when you inspect and evaluate treatment plants within your jurisdiction.

This position often follows employment as a Water Treatment Plant Operator where you manage the equipment, gauges and controls that clean and decontaminate water. Your dedication to following regulations, attention to detail, and passion for a clean water supply aid you in your goal to provide quality water to the city.
