A Visual Merchandiser oversees and coordinates the display exhibits in all parts of a retail store. Visual Merchandisers decide the theme and feel of a store, then evoke that environment through visual displays.

As a Visual Merchandiser, your initial design decisions are made on the strategic level, such as what color themes you want for the season and if your displays should tell a story or evoke an emotion. You consider your corporate branding message in these choices, then dress and present your products accordingly. For example when corporate rolls out a new campaign in eco-friendliness, you should use the color green and stand your models on recycled boxes.

After you decide on a grand strategy, you meet with your Window Dressers to brief them and discuss their design ideas. You then oversee their progress as they put up their displays, and continually walk through the store to make sure everything coordinates and nothing has been destroyed. If you work in a small store the positions of Window Dresser and Visual Merchandiser are generally combined.

On the whole, you help make the shopping experience as pleasant and engaging as possible so people like your brand, are inspired by your visual presentations, and enjoy the time they spend in your store.
