A Vision Rehabilitation Therapist helps blind or visually impaired people. Vision Rehabilitation Therapists provide instruction and education in order to help their clients relearn how to navigate their surroundings. It can be a tough and challenging job at times, so having a kind, understanding disposition will help you greatly.

As a Vision Rehabilitation Therapist, you are a Therapist first and foremost, and as such, you work to correct more than physical issues. You will also be there as a sounding board and emotional Therapist at times.

A large part of your job involves teaching your clients about the latest technology that can help them with their handicap. For instance, there are many different talking computer programs that they can use. You’ll have to learn how to operate some of these to be able to give a solid recommendation, and to be able to assist in setting them up.

Braille is yet another huge component of your training. You’ll have to learn how to read Braille, and learn it well enough to be able to teach others. You’ll also learn how to use a cane properly, and utilize a seeing-eye dog or another aid animal, then teach your clients how to employ such assistance.

It’s important that you yourself know how to do all of the things that blind or visually impaired people need to learn, so that you can be an effective Teacher to them. You’re empowering people to continue on with their lives with as much normalcy as possible. You might even be teaching them to learn a new trade entirely, and to work on their own. You’re enhancing their lives and giving them the tools they’ll need to live independently and relearn how to function in any situation.
