A Utility Sound Technician is the assistant to the Production Sound Mixer and the Boom Operator on a film set. This makes Utility Sound Technicians more or less audio Handymen, who help out their two Supervisors with whatever extra tasks they need done.
As a Utility Sound Technician, your day could include pulling cables, assembling and testing equipment, or operating a second boom (a remote-controlled recording device). You must know the audio equipment very well, so you can patch it up, manipulate the settings, and place it throughout the set with no trouble.
While the title ‘Utility Sound Technician’ is indigenous to the film industry, the broader title of Sound Technician refers to a similar position found in all sorts of live-sound venues.
