Urology sounds like a medical field that begs for jokes. However, to those suffering from urological problems, it’s no laughing matter. Issues with the urinary tract can be the bane of one’s existence. Luckily, there are Urologists — Doctors who specialize on these conditions — who can offer their healing touch.

A Urologist can have patients of any age or gender. Because you serve such a wide range of people, to be a Urologist you need an equally wide range of knowledge — you need to know pediatrics, internal medicine, and men’s and women’s health.

The process of diagnosing and curing a patient starts with an initial meeting. You talk with the patient and examine them to find out all you can about the problem. These meetings can be arranged by the patient’s Physician, who may be seeking a specialist’s opinion. Or they might be set up by the patient themselves.

Based on what you believe the problem is, you make a diagnosis and treatment plan. The main body parts that you’re concerned with include the kidneys, bladder, urethra, and male genitalia. You handle bladder infections, prostate problems, bedwetting issues, kidney stones, cancer, and incontinence — pretty much anything you can think of that has to do with peeing. Although not all patients require surgery, it is one of the main ways you fix problems.

When you’re not with patients, you keep detailed records of their treatment and progress. You research the problems your patients are facing to make sure you’re always giving them the most up-to-date information and treatment.
