Whoever you work with though, the first thing you should do is to make sure you understand the subject you’re tutoring. Say, you’re assisting someone on trigonometry, it doesn’t really help if you don’t know the difference between a sine and a cosine. The best way to get a good grasp of your subject is to take some classes in it. If you’re tutoring younger kids, this is easy since you’ve probably already passed all your elementary school classes. If you’re tutoring older students, it helps to stick to your college major, and branch out only if you feel really comfortable with the subject matter.

As a Tutor, it’s important to make the student feel relaxed and ready to learn. Getting to know them on a personal level, or using incentives like games and rewards can help. Also, relating complex questions to things they know well can help a student see a subject as more relevant to their life.
