How big are your shoulders? Big enough to handle the responsibility of hiring all employees in your organization, and being held accountable if or when something goes wrong? Then the position of Staffing Director could be for you. Staffing Directors are responsible for creating an overall strategy for hiring workers, and ensuring that all employees (new and longstanding) remain within it.

Working with top executives of the company, as Staffing Director you’re challenged to identify the staffing needs of the company to meet overall strategic goals. For example, if the company plans to find a scientific cure for the hiccups but all your Scientists are busy finding a cure for cancer, you must identify the need and recommend hiring that hiccup Scientist.

Those shoulders of yours must also be able to handle the weight of knowing that your recommendations may cost someone their job. You’re responsible for identifying areas that are not cost-effective in terms of personnel, and providing a plan to fix the problem.

For example, you may really like Bob in paper cut prevention, but frankly, he doesn’t do much, and is paid more than Suzy and Sam in the same department. Your job is to identify the problem (Bob) and recommend a solution (firing, laying off, replacing). On the flip side, you also get to bring on new people, and help them move through the ranks to their dream job.

Staffing Directors are the most popular (or most ignored) people in the building. And one of the perks of the job? When you’re ready for a change, you know where the good jobs are.
