Sonographer
Also known as Cardiac Sonographer, Cardiac/Vascular Sonographer, Ultrasonographer
Sonographers are the scuba divers of the human body. While they don’t literally go inside, Sonographers do use advanced ultrasound technology to see the organs hidden deep below the skin surface. These images look extremely cool, but more importantly, they offer valuable clues to the cause of a person’s illness, as well as its cure.
When someone hears the word “ultrasound,” they usually think of babies. While it’s true that the most common use of ultrasound is to look at babies inside the womb, it is also used to look at other organs, like the heart or the gallbladder.
Sonographers who focus on sick patients examine these organs for abnormalities. Surgery can relieve pain and illness that have plagued a patient for months, but Surgeons won’t operate until they know what’s wrong. Your work provides instant—and pain-free—answers.
During a sonography session, you start by explaining the procedure to the patient and preparing them for the examination. Once they’re lying comfortably on the exam table, you apply a special gel to the area that you’ll examine—the stomach, for instance. Then you pass a small, remote control-like device known as a transducer over the gel.
While performing the examination, you view the images on the machine’s screen to ensure they are clear and cover the correct area. Once you’ve collected enough images, you save them and present them to the Doctor for examination. This key evidence that you’ve just collected lets the patient know what exactly their condition is, and how to improve it. Ultimately, you help them live happier, healthier lives.
