Solar Process Engineer

Engineering is the business of finding solutions to everyday problems. In the case of a Solar Process Engineer, that means finding ways of using solar energy to power homes and businesses.

Since the early days of this industry, the technique has been fairly simple: funnel the sun’s rays through an inverter, which converts it into energy. The ways this technology has been—and will be—used are ever changing. So Solar Process Engineers continue to seek advancements, while focusing on the basic process of energy creation.

As a Solar Process Engineer, you often work in a manufacturing plant. You start the process by evaluating needs and identifying problems. For example, is there a more efficient way to build solar panels? Are there storage options beyond batteries? Is there a more effective machine that could be used in the plant?

After you come up with the answers, you observe the current process, consider equipment capabilities, and make recommendations. These might include rearranging steps in the production line or replacing equipment. Along the way, you document your observations.

Outside of the plant, you work to set up solar farms and other large-scale projects. You consider land-use laws and local building regulations in formulating a layout plan. Then you supervise the construction, test the output, and fix design issues along the way. Of course, you do all this while meeting project deadlines and budgets.
