Soil Conservationists protect natural resources, particularly soil and water. If you care about the environment and Mother Nature, the job of a Soil Conservationist could be perfect for you. In this position, you provide direction to private landowners, like Ranchers and Farmers, as well as local, state, and federal government agencies, by finding ways to improve commodities such as cattle and crops while keeping the environment safe.

Sometimes referred to as a Range Manager or Conservation Scientist, Soil Conservationists also oversee rangelands, which are areas designated for livestock, timber, recreation, or wildlife protection, and maintain a balance between business and nature.

Say, for example, you oversee property used for livestock grazing. The Farmer wants to increase the size of his herd by 250, but you know that too many cows will cause significant harm to the environment.

Instead of vetoing the idea altogether, however, you negotiate a compromise. The Farmer is allowed to add 175 head of cattle in exchange for an additional 100 acres of useable pasture. This plan provides increased profits for the Farmer without damaging the property.

Excellent communication and negotiation skills are essential as a Soil Conservationist. Planning and coordinating several projects (from soil erosion control to land use) require clear messages and organization to keep all the balls in the air. It’s a rewarding (and fun) job that lets you work outside and enjoy the sunshine while saving the earth at the same time.
