A softball game is a choreographed event where two teams decide to play by a set of rules, and the team with the most points at the end of the game emerges victorious. While this might sound straightforward, few softball games run this smoothly, and some people break the rules in order to get ahead in the game. Softball Umpires make sure the game progresses according to the rules.

Typically, a Softball Umpire works as part of a team during the softball game. One Softball Umpire stands behind home base, and the other stands at the bases in the field.

At the start of the game, you toss a coin to determine which team will bat first, and then you begin. Yelling, “Play ball!” might seem exciting the first time you do it, but the thrill may wear off by game 100.

If you’re standing at home base, you determine which balls are strikes and which are fouls, and you may holler when people have struck out. Sometimes, the players will disagree with you and yell, and then you may be required to kick them out of the game as well.

If you’re standing in the field, you determine when players have arrived safely on the bases and when they’ve been tagged before they arrive. Once again, players may disagree and you might be required to remove them.

Each action that takes place during a game may require your judgment call. The teams may all look at you when something happens, and you must be confident about what you’ve seen and what the rules say you should do.
