Unless you’re a Psychic, you probably don’t have a crystal ball. That doesn’t stop you from wondering about the future, however — and it doesn’t stop companies, either, which is why more and more of them are turning to computer models called “simulations” to predict and prepare for it.

As a Simulation Developer, you create those simulations, which are like video games that feature real-world scenarios. Scientists use simulations, for instance, to predict chemical reactions. Governments use them to predict terrorist plots and plan military operations. Surgeons use them to learn and practice new surgical techniques. And Training and Development Specialists use them in leadership development for Managers and Supervisors.

No matter how the simulation is used or by whom, it’s your responsibility as a Simulation Developer to plan, develop, and test it. Much like a Game Programmer or Software Developer, you typically spend your days doing the following tasks: First, you conceptualize simulations, which requires deciding what the final products will look like and how they will work. Second, you act as a Computer Programmer, writing the source code that makes simulations function in collaboration with Software Architects, 3D Modelers, and others. Finally, you test and troubleshoot simulations, making sure they’re operational and bug-free.

Many Computer Programmers spend their lives in abstract worlds with walls made of computer script. Not the Simulation Developer. Instead, you spend yours firmly rooted in the real world, building situational models that help people prepare today for what’s coming tomorrow — whether it’s a new opportunity, a new threat, or a new world order!
