Shampoo Technician

“Lather, rinse, repeat.” It’s not only good advice on hair care, but it also describes your job.

Before hair can be cut or styled, it has to be cleaned first. As a Shampoo Technician, you shampoo the hair of clients before they sit in the Stylist ’s chair.

Since everyone knows how to shampoo, the actual responsibilities of this job are pretty basic, but there are a few things you should keep in mind while you work. For example, when clients have fake hair (like weaves, plugs, or wigs), you have to be extra careful so you don’t accidentally pull out a piece of the hair. When you’re working with colored or dyed hair, you have to use the right shampoo so the chemicals don’t interact badly and change the color.

Though a quality shampoo job is your most important responsibility, customer service is another big aspect of this role. You should enjoy talking with clients and making them feel at ease, since an unsatisfactory experience with you can negatively affect their opinion of the salon as a whole.

This is an entry-level position, and most Shampoo Technicians use it as a chance to gain experience. Not all salons employ Shampoo Technicians, and the ones that do tend to be high-end. When you take this role, it can help you get your foot in the door of a salon that would otherwise take years to notice you and your work.
