It takes a lot to run a school. What would students do without a schedule of classes? What would Teachers do without a budget? What would parents do without after school programs? From daycares to universities, School Administrators make education possible.
The School Administrator career covers a range of positions and settings. If you’re a School Administrator, you could be a Principal, School Superintendent, Dean, or Provost at an elementary school or a college, a large public school or tiny private school. Depending on your role, you might focus on discipline or finances or academics.
Although you will get to know plenty of students, the majority of your day is spent working with the faculty and staff. You will set school-wide goals, determine curriculum, make announcements, observe classrooms, dispel staff conflicts, and hire and fire Teachers, Coaches, and support staff. You’ll be there every morning before classes start, and you’ll be there well into the evening when there’s a concert, awards ceremony, or championship game.
Since the world of education boasts plenty of bureaucracy, some days you might get bogged down in paperwork or meetings, but the end goal is always the same: to give students the best education possible. That’s why it can be such a satisfying job—even if you’re the only one whose car is still in the school parking lot during the summer.
