A Roofer repairs, replaces or installs roofing materials on the top of houses, businesses, and other buildings. Roofers submit quotes for the work to be performed and once approved, you order and schedule delivery of products. Often this work requires the use of heavy equipment to hoist the heavy materials up to the roof, so you’ll need a love of the outdoors and an affinity for physical labor.

Whether you are self employed or work for a roofing company, your daily responsibilities as a Roofer are basically the same. Each job starts with a careful inspection. If you are repairing an existing roof, you must identify the source of the problem. Often the roof is leaking, which requires you to locate the area exposed to the rain and mend it with tar or caulking. If you are installing a new roof, you begin with an understanding of the materials being used. This varies depending on the geographical location, roof design, and weather elements. Some material choices include brick, shingles, and metal.

Most of your day as a Roofer is spent on the roof, hammering, gluing, cutting, fitting, and guiding materials into a precise network of protection for the house. In addition to these tasks, you also work with insulation and apply finishing glazes as required.

Safety is an important factor in your job. Roofs are often steep and slippery. Because of this, Roofers wear a safety harness and shoes with traction.
