Operating x-ray technology might the closest you’re going to get to having a super power, in this lifetime. It’s not quite x-ray vision, but it’s the next best thing. And it might not save the world, but it will definitely help people in concrete ways every day.

As a Radiologic Technologist, you’re the one operating x-ray machines at a hospital or other healthcare facility. A Radiologic Technologist might perform regular x-rays to look for broken bones and the like; execute more advanced MRIs or CT scans, which produce three-dimensional images; or monitor mammograms, which use low-dose x-rays to scan the breasts. To produce a suitable image that Doctors will be able to use to make definitive diagnoses, the Radiologic Technologist will have to work quickly and carefully to get the exact right angle.

Besides geeking out on the x-ray technology, you have to be good with people too. Before each procedure, you explain to the patient what’s going to happen; some patients might be more scared than others, so you’ll have to put on a smile and calming voice, and answer their questions with confidence. With your training in anatomy and information off of the patient’s chart, you’ll position their body correctly to prepare them for the scan.

While the novelty of being able to see through people’s skin might wear off after a while, you’ll always be proud that you’re helping heal injuries and treat diseases with your knowledge of this technology.
