A Power Transmission Engineer plans for the installation of electric lines and systems. Falling under the broader category of Electrical Engineers, the Power Transmission Engineer oversees all aspects of electricity transmission, from conception to construction.

As a Power Transmission Engineer, you might be employed by a utility company or a municipality. Working closely with Surveyors, Linemen, and Construction Engineers, you’re responsible for getting electricity to homes and businesses. Using your background in mathematics, physics, English, and computer science, you plan and estimate expenses related to the construction of transmission lines, and determine the best route and placement of electric cables.

For example, a new manufacturing complex is constructed 50 miles away from the nearest electric generation plant. Of course, the new plant needs electricity to operate, and your job is to get it there.

Using your logic and reasoning skills, you determine the safest and most cost-effective route for electric lines. Your first inclination is a straight path between the electric plant and the manufacturing facility, but while applying for the necessary permits, you realize that this won’t be possible. You then find a suitable alternative and begin planning again.

Stellar communication skills are essential as you draft proposals for company executives and inform others of obstacles along the way. Once the plan is approved, you call on your project management training to oversee the construction process.
