Police Chiefs are appointed or elected officials entrusted with running the entire police department. In this role, you report directly to the Mayor or Governor, analyze your department’s response to area crime, and implement improvements while overseeing the direction of law enforcement as a whole in your community.

Forget the bumbling Police Chiefs portrayed in cartoons and on TV shows. Police Chiefs are no-nonsense professionals bound by the highest ethical standards. As one of these elite Law Enforcement Officers, you take your duties seriously and demonstrate a keen understanding of every department under your guidance and how they function as a cohesive unit.

By analyzing statistics, you develop programs for the department’s benefit and to educate the public. For example, if you want combat local identity theft, set up a program where Officers hold town hall-style forums to make the public more aware of what criminals are after and how to protect themselves.

You also deal with people management. Any police department is only as strong as its weakest members. As Police Chief, you discipline Officers who don’t abide by departmental policies and procedures, and fire reckless Cops who don’t adequately serve the needs of the public. In that vein, you also recognize the achievements of the best and brightest by promoting them and honoring them at awards ceremonies and in the media.

Many of the executive decisions you make as Police Chief come from your intimate knowledge of the community, the law and your staff. At this level, it’s about gut instincts. Use that force, Chief. You’re as close to a Jedi as they come.
