The modern medical field has Doctors for nearly every known medical problem, and in podiatry it’s all about treating feet. Podiatrists examine, diagnose, and treat foot problems ranging from ingrown toenails to sports injuries. Many seek out a position as a Podiatry Professor at a university after several years of working in the field.

Why would someone need to see a foot Doctor in the first place? Our feet offer us a great deal of support throughout our lives. Podiatrists deal with common problems such as ankle injuries, pain, calluses and other skin problems, and toenail problems such as infections or ingrown nails. Podiatry Professors treat these conditions and teach their students how to do the same.

If you’re a Podiatry Professor, you often balance treating patients with teaching classes. As a Professor, you’re the highest ranking Teacher around, and you know your stuff when it comes to feet. In your classes, you teach medical students the basics of podiatry, and explain the various treatment options available to patients.

To balance your workload, you might see patients on certain days of the week and teach on other days. When treating patients, you interview them about the problem, examine the injury or troublesome condition, and recommend a course of treatment. With the patient’s permission, you share their story with your classes to give students a shot at solving a real-life medical condition. Your job lets your share your knowledge with a group of students interested in learning all they can from you.
