A Plumbing Drafter makes plans and drawings of plumbing systems. The blueprints a Plumbing Drafter designs are then used by Contractors to create plumbing systems for the structures they’re building. You may create systems for structures as small as single-family homes or as large as metropolitan skyscrapers. If you’re a Plumbing Drafter, you can say, “The sky’s the limit,” and mean it.

The drawings that you make are very precise and technical. You can either sketch out your plan on paper with a protractor, or use a computer. Many Drafters begin their work by hand, and then use CADD systems to refine the drawings.

Oftentimes, an Architect or Contractor will give you a rough representation of the system. You will then be expected to use your math and engineering skills to flesh the blueprint out. Exact measurements are necessary to facilitate the building of a system that works in practice as well as in theory.

You work closely with the Contractors, Architects and Construction Laborers who bring your vision to life. So although your drawings speak for themselves, it pays to have great communication skills to help turn your vision into reality.

The average person may not think about plumbing systems very often…until something goes awry. You’re in charge of designing a flawless system that will satisfy your client. When the project is complete, you can be proud that your careful calculations are keeping that system running smoothly!
