Just as the walls of your home protect you from storms, your skin protects your body from foreign invaders like bacteria, dirt, and even the sun’s harmful rays. Over time, natural wear-and-tear or an accident can lead to damaged skin. Plastic Surgeons use surgical procedures to repair this damage, and to help their patients look and feel their best.

In science fiction movies, people press a button and their looks change instantly. In real life, it’s not that easy. As a Plastic Surgeon, you must first consider the patient’s current health, medical history, and the necessity of the procedure—along with its risks—before you can even think of picking up a scalpel.

Half of the workweek might be spent talking with patients to explain the risks and benefits of their surgery. The other half might be spent in the surgery center. A team of Nurses and other Plastic Surgeons help you monitor the patient’s condition, and carry out the surgery in a way that does the least damage to the body. Today’s technologies allow Surgeons to make tiny incisions instead of large cuts so the body recovers quicker with little or no scarring.

After the procedure is over, you instruct patients on how to care for themselves at home. Then for several weeks afterward, you schedule follow-up appointments to ensure patients have no adverse reactions to the surgery, and that infections do not occur. You can perform surgery purely for aesthetic purposes, or to fix a medical condition or a disfigurement brought about by an accident.
