Blood is made up of solid materials suspended in a liquid called plasma. While people who donate blood give both solids and liquids, some people donate only the liquid part. This plasma is then given to people who have liver disease, burns, or severe infections.

Plasma Processors play a key role in this process, as they protect and distribute these donations.

As a Plasma Processor, you’re directly responsible for the plasma in your facility. Often, that means you spend at least part of your day in a freezer, where the packets of plasma are stored. You make sure that the supplies are adequate, and that the room is kept at the proper temperature so nothing spoils.

Before the donations can be used, they must be tested and proven safe. During a standard workday as a Plasma Processor, you may run hundreds of tests, determining blood type and the presence of disease. If you find that a sample isn’t safe to use, you dispose of it carefully and legally. Just throwing it in the trash or flushing it down the drain is illegal and could get your facility in trouble with the law.

Doctors and Surgeons work with your facility to obtain the plasma they need to help patients, and you’re the one they call to place orders. As orders come in, you package donations carefully, making sure they won’t spoil on the trip, and you schedule a delivery service to bring the fluids to the medical professionals.
