If you work as a Photographic Equipment Technician in a small repair shop, your job involves a large amount of customer service. You talk to the customer about their equipment and the issues they’re having. After promising that you’ll be extremely careful with their equipment and ushering them out the door, you do a thorough workup of the equipment, running tests to find the cause of the problem. You also consult a pricing sheet to determine how much replacement parts will cost.

You then prepare an estimate for the customer, and make sure they approve the estimate before you begin work. If it is approved, you make the repairs.

If, on the other hand, you work for a large camera company, you may never talk to customers. Instead, you’re given equipment to work on, along with a written description of the problems the client is facing. You run tests to isolate the problem, and fix that problem as quickly as possible.

You spend much of your day working with very small and intricate parts. To do this, you may have to use magnifying glasses. You must remember to use those glasses rather than squinting at the small pieces.
