Phlebotomy Supervisor
Ensure smooth operations at a blood lab. Also known as Phlebotomy Services Technician
The process of drawing blood for testing is instrumental in finding and curing diseases, but it also has the potential to introduce illness and infection if performed improperly. A Phlebotomy Supervisor oversees a team of Phlebotomists who draw blood samples and run various tests on them. Phlebotomy Supervisors ensure that safety rules and regulations are met, and that the laboratory is orderly and well stocked for performing daily testing and examinations.
Under the direction of the head Physician, as Phlebotomy Supervisor you’re in charge of assigning tasks to your team of Phlebotomists. The Physician explains the patient cases you’re dealing with that day, and you divide assignments up between team members.
Your main concern is seeing that all rules within the lab are followed. Sterile equipment and a spotlessly clean environment prevent infections from spreading. Your thorough recordkeeping and labeling systems prevent blood sample mix-ups. You also check in when blood is being drawn from a patient to ensure that it’s done properly and in a safe manner.
Often, you oversee two or more laboratories in different locations. You may travel between them during the day, or spend half of your week in the first laboratory and the other half in the second. Before you leave though, you plan out your team’s activities so each person knows what to do and can ask questions. Your leadership skills ensure that each job gets done, and gets done right.
