Payroll Manager

Payroll Managers are found in the finance or accounting departments of companies of all sizes, from nonprofits to corporations. A Payroll Manager is in charge of everything that has to do with payroll, which means the Payroll Manager’s work is extremely important since it lets employees get paid.

When a new employee comes to your company, you’re part of the group that determines what their pay rate should be and what kind of benefits they should get. You help them fill out their hiring paperwork. This ensures that the proper deductions are made for tax purposes, and lets you answer any questions they might have about things like retirement account options.

You’re also the one a newly promoted or fired employee comes to see. In these situations, you do things like increase pay rates or cut a person’s final check. You work closely with your company’s human resources department, so it’s necessary that you like working with others and find it easy to collaborate.

This job is all about the paperwork. You fill out all the necessary information to make sure payroll gets in and everyone gets paid. You check the accuracy of the hours reported, make sure any necessary deductions have been taken (like for parking or social security), and fill out tax forms during tax season. You work a lot with spreadsheets, creating reports that show management exactly how much everyone is paid, and how that fits into the overall budget.
