Paramedic
Give first aid emergency treatment to sick or injured people.
A Paramedic administers medical aid to people in emergency situations. Paramedics are often dispatched along with Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) after a call to 911, but they’re in charge of more advanced medical procedures once they get to the scene. Because you’ll often be the first medical professional to respond, it’s up to you as a Paramedic to act quickly to save a person’s life.
There’s no way to predict when an emergency will happen, so be prepared for irregular work hours and periods of prolonged physical activity. EMTs help you with basic first aid like CPR. When things get serious, you perform complex procedures like intubation and emergency surgery. If a patient needs to be rushed to the hospital, you ride in the back of the ambulance with them, monitoring their condition, giving them medicine, helping them breathe, and often holding their hand to keep them calm until they can be seen by a Doctor.
If an injured party needs drugs or an x-ray in transit, you are qualified to make those determinations and administer anything needed. As technology advances, ambulances are continually being outfitted with more advanced pieces of equipment. As the most experienced member of the ambulance’s crew, you operate these machines and interpret any vital signs they are designed to monitor.
It takes levelheadedness and a calm persona to be a successful Paramedic. If you’re the one people turn to when they accidentally burn themselves on the stove or when they’re feeling the first signs of the sniffles, this profession might be perfect for your nurturing personality.
