Just like people, most companies don’t really like change. It unsettles employees, ruins morale, and, in general, lowers productivity. An Organizational Development Consultant works to make changes less stressful. Organizational Development Consultants use behavioral science (that’s the science of how people learn and work) and apply it to business, using proven methods to improve employee morale and productivity.

The companies you handle as an Organizational Development Consultant can be anything from nonprofits to schools to major corporations, and the suggestions you make can affect everyone from entry-level workers to the CEO. So what kind of issues are you working with? Pretty much anything that changes the way a company does business.

This means you might come in to help out after a company changes management, goes through layoffs, changes its focus, or even moves offices. You might even be called in to create the change, shaking things up so a company can run better or more efficiently.

You start your work while the dust is still settling on a big transition. You evaluate the company by talking with employees and Managers to get a feel for what’s working and what isn’t. From here, you make your suggestions.

This might include holding workshops aimed at improving the Managers’ leadership skills, implementing new policies, or using new types of technology to streamline the work process. You could also give a general overview of the company and its employees, letting upper management know who the hard workers are and who should be shown the door.
