When a woman needs routine gynecological care, she may be accustomed to seeing her Ob-Gyn. In some parts of the world, however, there’s simply a shortage of Doctors, and they cannot handle the constant influx of patients. Harried Ob-Gyns share the workload with Obstetrics and Gynecology Physician Assistants. In this arrangement, the Obstetrics and Gynecology Physician Assistant takes on small, routine tasks, and the Doctor steps in to handle major health concerns.

The amount of work you’re able to do as an Obstetrics and Gynecology Physician Assistant depends on the laws in your state. In some states, you’re able to handle almost every task that a Doctor can handle. In other states, however, your role is much more limited.

Women visit you for routine Pap tests and breast examinations. They rarely enjoy these tests, and you work quickly to reduce their discomfort. These cancer screenings are often routine and unremarkable, but if the test uncovers cancerous cells, you perform advanced procedures to help firm up the diagnosis. You then send the women to Oncologists for further treatments.

In most states, you’re not allowed to assist women during childbirth, but you often perform examinations of pregnant women. In these exams, you measure the growth of the baby, and perform blood and urine tests on the mother to make sure her health is intact. In later appointments, you perform ultrasound examinations to show the anxious parents the face and tiny feet of the baby. Women often have many questions during pregnancy, and you schedule long appointments so you can answer each question with care.
