When they’re quite tiny, children learn to master the art of urination. They learn to recognize when they have to go, and they learn to unclench their muscles to release the flow at the proper time. However, diseases such as Parkinson’s or brain injuries can chip away at these lessons, leaving people unable to control their urination. This can be embarrassing, of course, but it can also be life threatening, as a perennially full bladder puts a lot of pressure on the kidneys.

A Neurourologist can assist by providing treatments to help soothe inflamed nerves. The Neurourologist can also help patients learn to empty their bladders in other ways.

As a Neurourologist, you’re a specialist, meaning that most patients must have a note from their Doctors before they can visit you. These notes are more than permission slips to you, as they often contain details about what caused the patient’s urination problems. You read all of these notes carefully.

Each visit begins with an examination. You feel the patient’s abdomen to determine how much urine they’re holding inside. Often, you send them to an Ultrasound Technician or a Radiology Technician so they can snap photographs that you can study. Sometimes, you ask patients to give urine samples to Laboratory Technicians so you can learn more about what’s in their urine.

Once all the tests are complete and you’ve studied the results, you draw up a treatment plan for the patient. The medications you prescribe can help them feel more comfortable. In severe cases, patients must use catheters to empty their bladders, and you show them how to do this by pointing at diagrams.
