Sure, everyone on the technical team (and their mother) has an idea how to improve a company’s network security system. But who can actually draw up detailed plans of the system, and put them in place? That would be you, the Network Security Engineer.

Computer networks consist of all the computers, routers, and servers hooked together so they can exchange information with one another. But while connectivity makes for speedy communication, it also opens the door for hackers to steal valuable info, or unleash a virus that deletes all your documents. No company wants that, so they hire you, the Network Security Engineer, to set up virtual security systems that keep hackers out.

On the Network Security Engineer job, you work with a Network Security Administrator to plan out the new security system. You install a host of software programs, such as anti-virus software, that block potential threats, then monitor access to the network. Viewing reports of this access lets you identify a breach in your security.

During the day, you tweak systems until they work perfectly. Too many people have access to the company’s server? Adding a password fixes this. Need to protect sensitive information? Setting up data encryption guarantees that unauthorized eyes can’t peek.

Once you’ve installed the software and made the necessary security changes, you write up all the information pertaining to the system. Employees need passwords to gain access, and should have a list of what they can and cannot do while logged on to the network. With you on the job, cyber criminals don’t stand a chance.
