Motorcycles are a blast. From street bikes to mopeds to dirt bikes on a track, there’s nothing quite like the feel of the wind in your hair and bugs in your teeth. So when motorcycles need repairs, owners rely on you, the Motorcycle Technician, to get the job done in an accurate and timely manner.

As a Motorcycle Technician, you always want the owner to be happily back on the trails, so you get to work, focusing on one task at a time. You typically specialize in one type of repair, such as carburetors, but you might also perform a variety of tasks on a variety of rigs. If you work for a dealership, you might specialize in one particular brand of bike. Either way, it’s your job as the Motorcycle Technician, to perform regular maintenance and identify problems when bikes are brought in for repair.

Computers are an important tool to aid you in diagnosing the issue. You run tests on different systems, sometimes removing parts, so you can locate the problem. You commonly tackle issues with the ignition, fuel, or braking systems. Other common repairs include transmissions and engine components.

Once you’ve identified the problem, it’s time to order replacement parts and get your hands greasy. With the new parts in place, you again rely on the computer to calibrate the system, and then retest in search of other issues. When you’re done, the motorcycle, dirt bike, quad, or moped that limped into your shop is ready once more to suck up fuel and transform it into raw power.
