Once upon a time, a Dermatologist was a Dermatologist. End of story. Now that technology is changing and procedures range from those that are medically necessary to those that are nice to have, dermatology has split into cosmetic dermatology for enhancing beauty and appearance, and medical dermatology for treating skin conditions related to medical problems or patient discomfort. As a Medical Dermatologist, you diagnose and treat various conditions ranging from skin tags to skin cancer.

But even as a Medical Dermatologist, you can still perform certain procedures that are aimed solely at improving a person’s appearance. Take wart removal, for instance. Warts are harmless enough, but no one really wants them staking out real estate on their fingers. A quick freeze by a Medical Dermatologist and that wart’s gone for good.

In other cases, a condition may be a threat to the person’s health. Moles can indicate whether or not cancer is forming, while a skin rash may warn of a harmful disease. During a patient’s visit, you examine the affected area and collect skin cell samples for testing. In the follow-up appointment, you let them know what’s wrong and how to fix it.

On days when you’re not examining new patients, you treat those from previous visits. Whether it requires minor surgery or only medication, you explain the process to the patient and tell them what to do in case the problem persists. Your knowledgeable advice helps them make the best choice no matter what the situation is, and you have the skills to carry out any procedure their problem may require.
