Shoplifting and employee theft are a thorn in the side of business owners. Not only do they skim profits from the company, but they can also result in higher product prices for the consumer. Many businesses find it a good investment to hire someone who can recommend and implement techniques that reduce this type of loss for the company. That person is you, the Loss Prevention Manager.

You have a variety of tasks in your position as the Loss Prevention Manager. But your main goal is to prevent theft, so you focus on procedures and company policies that make it difficult for thieves to succeed. For example, as a Loss Prevention Manager, you attach sensors to clothing, or install cameras to observe shoppers from a remote location. You also train employees about shoplifting so they can identify suspicious behavior.

Unfortunately, employees themselves are often tempted to steal anything from paperclips to petty cash to private customer data. They do this not only by walking out of the store with products, but also by manipulating the system. For instance, they might ring up a sale at a discounted price for a friend, or exchange a more expensive product for a returned item. So you review transaction histories, interview employees, and help identify fraudulent behavior.

Whether the theft is carried out by an employee or a customer, you’re part of the team that responds to it. You detain shoplifters and call the police. You might even walk the floor, act as a Security Guard at the store entrance, or observe the action through video cameras in the office.
