When a Surgeon, an Eyeglass Maker, or an Electrician needs to make very precise cuts, they reach for tools that have lasers in them. Your job as a Laser Technician is to build those tools, and fix them if they break.

A day-to-day job as a Laser Technician starts with a set of drawings from an Engineer or Product Developers, detailing exactly how strong and big the laser should be, and where it should be installed. On the best days, those drawings will be clear and will give you all the information you need. On other days, however, as the Laser Technician, you may need to talk at length about those drawings, and explain what you’re able and unable to build.

You then stop the talking phase of the project and begin the building phase. You assemble the laser, filling a tube with gasses then aligning light and mirrors to make that laser work.

You place the laser inside the machine, following the drawings. Then you test it to make sure it works. If it doesn’t, you run through your installation again to determine what went wrong.

Sometimes, you’re given broken lasers and asked to fix them. You check that the tube isn’t broken and is full of gas. You also make sure the housing device around the laser is wired properly. Then you replace any broken elements that you find, and test the device to make sure it works.
