If asked to describe the complex world of computers in a single phrase, “It’s a jungle out there!” would fit the bill. Without a fearless leader –the Information Technology Manager – to bravely lead the IT team through the pitfalls of malfunctioning software and deadly viruses waiting to ensnare unprepared security systems, a business’s computer network would sink like quicksand.

As an Information Technology Manager, you, together with your team, keep all the various parts of a computer network updated and running smoothly so a business can do its work. From the physical devices – like computers and printers – to software and servers, an Information Technology Manager creates the perfect system to handle all the data a business deals with.

This is a fast-paced and demanding job. Computers are at the heart of most business operations today, so they must be kept up and running. When you receive a call from a frazzled Manager saying his internet is down, it might be that he forgot to turn his airport on, but it might be that the system is malfunctioning. Either way, you figure out how to fix it. So say you find the problem was caused by a virus attacking the computer: You’ll stop the virus and repair the damage. You could then realize all the computers need a software update, so you instruct your team to make the changes the next day.

You’re also responsible for helping businesses transition to the future. So in between installing new systems and repairing computers infected by viruses or plagued with buggy software, you research the newest information in the field. This gives you an idea how to improve existing networks and lets you try new options when a client wants the latest technology available.
