HVAC Mechanics service and maintain air quality control frameworks in homes and businesses. HVAC stands for heating, ventilating, and air conditioning, and as an HVAC Mechanic, you make sure all of these systems are working together in tip-top shape. Typical duties include repair, preventative maintenance, and installation.

HVAC Mechanics do more than just keep the living room toasty in winter and cool in summer—though that’s a big part of the job. You’ll get calls from customers in all seasons when they are feeling uncomfortable because they can’t get their environment to the right temperature. For this reason, it’s imperative that you be an excellent communicator, able to determine what a client needs even when they don’t have your knowledge of technical terminology.

When you’re not troubleshooting ventilation systems, you’ll be testing humidity and air quality, which is regulated for safety in business settings. If you’re working at an establishment with refrigerators, you’ll check those systems for problems, and make sure they are up to code. Some days, you will also install large-scale pieces of equipment.

It’s important to note before you jump in that you might be exposed to unpleasant elements. If you’re fixing a heater or air conditioner, for example, you might need to withstand extreme heat or cold for a period of time while you test to make sure your handiwork has fixed any issues. You can also encounter dust, moisture, and other air pollutants while you’re tinkering with climate control equipment. Think ahead and be sure to carry masks, goggles, and gloves to protect yourself, and each project will go smoothly.
