A Granite Fabricator turns a slab of raw stone taken from a quarry into a beautiful piece of granite. Specifically, as a Granite Fabricator, you shape and polish slabs of stone and granite, then either install them yourself or ship them out for a third party to install. You do this shaping and polishing using heavy machinery, but the job of a Granite Fabricator isn’t an exact science: Each piece of stone is different, so you use your Craftsman skill and a touch of artistry to produce the perfect piece of granite for your client.

The three main types of machines you use in this job are saws, polishers, and routers. Saws cut large stone blocks into manageable slabs, while polishing machines smooth the rough surface of the granite so you can create any type of finish that your customer desires. Modern-day machinery has made this work more streamlined than ever, so it’s not uncommon to have a granite slab for a countertop in a home cut and polished in a single afternoon.

Your creativity comes into play when using a router, because this machine allows you to cut designs and different edges to give the granite the decorative and personalized look that suits your client’s need and vision. You may or may not install the finished granite product yourself, depending on the policy of the granite fabrication company that you work for. Keep in mind that heavy lifting often comes with the territory, and lifting 50 pounds or more on a daily basis isn’t unheard of.

If you’re a motivated self-starter, you can even one day branch off on your own and start a granite fabrication business, once you’ve developed enough contacts in the industry and gained sufficient experience working with the machinery.
