Geodetic Advisor

A Geodetic Advisor measures large areas of the earth’s surface using highly technical equipment. Geodetics is a branch of the earth sciences and focuses on the movement of the earth’s crust, tides, and polar motion. A Geodetic Advisor is typically employed in the architectural or engineering fields, identifying possible threats (earthquakes) or products (petroleum) for their employer.

As a Geodetic Advisor, you must have vast knowledge of all things science-related. College courses in earth science, chemistry, geology, physics, computer science, and astronomy are necessary. Science and investigatory work make the position exciting and intellectually demanding.

An average workday as a Geodetic Advisor may start with gathering data on a specific plate and then analyzing it. Using the information you’ve gathered, you then determine whether a specific location is suitable for building, mining, drilling, or other uses. Verbal and written communication skills are essential as you report your findings to Supervisors and company executives.

A love of the outdoors is key to this position as well, as you’re likely to spend more time outside than in. During the summer, you may experience an upswing in working hours when weather and light conditions are favorable. Geodetic Advisors employed by engineering firms often face a mixed bag of working hours during busier times.
