Gastroenterology Technician

Malfunctioning bones are easy to spot on a standard X-ray. Malfunctioning throats, stomachs, and other parts of the digestive system, however, aren’t. People with digestive system problems often must see a Gastroenterologist for advanced testing. A Gastroenterology Technician helps the Gastroenterologist.

As a Gastroenterology Technician, you may be the first to talk to patients who come to visit the Gastroenterologist. You take their temperature, blood pressure reading, and pulse count, and ask them about the symptoms they’re experiencing. You then write descriptions of those symptoms in their charts.

If a patient needs advanced testing, the Gastroenterology Technician prepares the tools the Doctor will need to perform those tests. You make sure each piece of equipment has been disinfected and is working properly. You may assist your Gastroenterologist during the procedures, handing them equipment and helping in any way you’re directed.

For example, if the Doctor snips out small bits of tissue for testing, you place that tissue in secured containers and send it to the laboratory. You may need advanced training to perform this sort of work.
