Gas Station Attendant

Gas Station Attendants assist customers with their car care needs. As a Gas Station Attendant, you rely on a variety of job skills, depending on the type of gas station you work for. No matter where you’re employed, though, personal communication and customer service skills are essential.

Gas stations that also provide automobile maintenance services often rely on the Gas Station Attendant to perform light mechanical duties, such as filling tires with air or checking the oil. These duties are typically done in addition to retail duties, like completing cash register transactions and suggesting other products and services (think beverages, snacks, or car washes).

A positive attitude and an ability to maintain your composure while under stress (not all customers will be happy) are essential to this customer-driven position. While waiting for customers to arrive, you stock shelves (with candy, drinks, motor oil, etc.) and keep the gas station clean.

Physical strength and stamina are also required, as you should expect to stand for several hours and lift up to 50 pounds repeatedly. The hours vary depending on the time of year (some are busier than others), providing flexibility in scheduling. In spite of the exhausting work though, your days are brightened as you develop relationships and friendships with frequent customers, which sometimes is more than enough reward.
