Freight Broker
Move cargo around a warehouse, station, or airport with efficient planning. Also known as Soliciting Freight Agent
The job of a Freight Broker is sort of like a Traffic Cop ’s. But instead of directing cars, the Freight Broker directs incoming and outgoing cargo and freight shipments. As a Freight Broker, you facilitate the movement of goods from one place to another, and make sure your customers get excellent service.
You can work anywhere cargo comes through—the office of a loading dock, an airplane terminal, a truck yard, or a train stop. When freight comes in, you figure out how to move it from point A to point B, and find an available means of carriage. You fill out and file the necessary paperwork (which can be stuff like importing or exporting papers), route a path, and contact Drivers or Movers to get the shipment on its way.
You also keep detailed records of everything you see in the shipment, including the size, amount, and dimensions. Then you attach an address label, and send the shipment on its way. You track it as it makes its way to its destination, and keep your customer updated on its status.
Today, this job is mostly done online, so computer skills are necessary. You’ll also need excellent communication skills because you work with a lot of Truck Drivers and clients. And as with any service-oriented business, you’ll surely have your share of customer complaints.
In order to keep things running smoothly, you maintain constant contact with both client and Driver. Additionally, you keep a close eye on the shipment to avoid things like damage or loss.
