The title “Explosive Expert” might bring to mind an image of a person deciding whether to cut the red wire or the blue wire on the bomb found under the building, but in reality, there are a lot of different facets to this job. Though some Explosive Experts are employed by police squads or military patrols to defuse dangerous bombs, you can also hold a number of other positions that are a lot less exciting.

So, what can you do aside from defusing dangerous bombs? Explosive Experts are hired by construction companies to make holes for new swimming pools or foundations, and by research labs to create the next big thing in combustible material. You could also work with mining or engineering companies that need help making it through thick rock, or you might get lucky and snag one of the few jobs available on a movie or television set. Here, you work as a Pyrotechnician, creating the fake explosions needed for war dramas, or blowing up cars to make a point on a commercial.

No matter what you’re doing in this field, the overall responsibility is to blow things safely. To do that, you need to be aware of the materials you’re using in the explosive as well as the environment around you. You decide what type of explosive should be used and how it should be placed, and ensure that the proper precautions are taken to protect those in the surrounding area. Safety is your top priority, as an incorrectly packed explosive or a bad fuse can be extremely dangerous for everyone involved.
