The natural world goes by many names, including the planet, the environment, and the earth. Perhaps its most popular moniker, however, is Mother Nature, as nature nurtures life with food, shelter, and water — just like a mother does her child. Unfortunately, all parents age, and when they do, it’s up to their children to become Caretakers.
Mother Nature is no exception. Because she’s over four billion years old, she’s on the verge of decrepitude and in need of some serious love!
When you’re an Environmental Education Specialist, you do your part to care for Mother Nature by teaching people how to respect her. Part Environmentalist, part Teacher, you accomplish that by designing and executing educational programs that promote environmental responsibility and stewardship.
Employed by school boards, museums, conservation societies, nature clubs, outdoor education centers, and government agencies, among others, Environmental Education Specialists encourage consumers, governments, and corporations to be good environmental citizens by making sustainable decisions in the areas of recycling and waste, energy efficiency, resource conservation, and wildlife preservation. On a day-to-day basis, this typically involves researching environmental issues, writing environmental articles, teaching environmental workshops, and producing educational materials that promote environmental stewardship to schools, companies, youth groups, families, communities, and members of the general public.
Because the world is transitioning to a “green” economy — where sustainability is just as important as profitability — you’re in a key position as an Environmental Education Specialist to make a difference for the planet and all the future generations by teaching people the dos and don’ts of living on earth.
