The basics of the job of an English Teacher are like the basics of any teaching job. As an English Teacher, you use techniques like essays, homework, and projects to instruct your students on the different concepts and skills they need to know. To check if they’re learning the way they should, you use tests, homework, and grades. And when you see any students lagging, you provide solutions, like extra time to study.

The difference lies in the subject. As an English Teacher, you introduce kids to English books of all kinds, along with the basics of reading and writing. When you work with younger kids, you have the important job of teaching them their ABCs and sentence formation, and encouraging them to improve their reading level. You not only get them excited about books and stories, but also set them up for a lifetime of success (after all, nobody gets far if they don’t have these fundamentals).

On the other hand, working with older kids might be a bit harder. After all, you’d be lucky to find a high school senior with the same enthusiasm for learning that a second-grader has. However, you get to do so much more in classes than you do with young kids. Older students understand more complex thoughts and ideas. This is when you can start having intelligent, challenging discussions. You get to bring in the classics like Shakespeare or Chaucer, and open up their minds to a world of reading that doesn’t just revolve around vampire books.
