If you’ve ever had to heat an Alaskan home in January, or cool a Floridian home in July, you know how expensive energy can be. Now, multiply your home’s utility bills by hundreds, thousands, or even millions of square feet and you’ve got a rough idea of what it costs to cool, heat, and power an airport, office building, shopping mall, hotel, convention center, warehouse, etc. Here’s a hint: It’s not cheap!

As an Energy Consultant, you help companies analyze their energy consumption, with the goal of reducing their energy costs. Employed by an energy consultancy, Energy Consultants accomplish that first by conducting an energy audit, which involves reviewing the client’s previous energy bills to determine how much energy is being used, where and when it’s being used — for instance, in what parts of the building, by what building systems, and at what peak times of day — and how much it’s costing.

After the energy audit, an Energy Consultant like you can assist clients in creating an energy plan, which includes strategies for reducing energy consumption, eliminating energy waste, and offsetting energy costs. A typical energy plan, for instance, might involve purchasing energy-efficient appliances and machines; installing energy-efficient windows and lighting; replacing company cars with hybrid vehicles; purchasing renewable energy credits; installing onsite solar or wind power; and training building occupants to turn off lights, recycle trash, and avoid “phantom loads” by unplugging electronics that consume energy even when they’re off.

At once pro-environment and pro-business, you’re a corporate crusader with a conscience, trying to save the planet while also saving your clients money!
