Electronics Engineering Technologist

Electronics are an everyday part of our lives. From the car radio to the microwave to the cell phone, electronics keep us fed, socializing, and entertained. Because of our ever-growing dependence on electronics (think computers and Pilot navigation systems), Electronics Engineers are always busy designing new and more efficient models. And where Electronics Engineers go, their right-hand men and women—Electronics Engineering Technologists—follow.

As an Electronics Engineering Technologist, you do whatever the Engineer instructs you to do. Well, you don’t really have to get her coffee or pick up her dry cleaning, but in the lab, office, or field, you perform just about every other electronics-related duty. That means you might build a prototype from the schematics she has laboriously designed. You might also make repairs to broken electronic parts or perform maintenance on the equipment you use.

A job as an Electronics Engineering Technologist means having an understanding of how electronics work. While that is closely related to the field of electrical engineering, electronics specifically focuses on devices that use electricity rather than on the creation and use of electricity. Of course, you still know all about electricity as part of your job. So while you analyze circuits, voltage, charge, current, and wiring, you also focus on improving products, creating new toys for consumers young and young at heart, and making sure that the products we use daily are safe and efficient.
