Electro-Mechanical Technician

Being an Electro-Mechanical Technician is like playing real-life video games. With your controller in hand, you digitally control an object in another location. Just in this case, the object you’re controlling with your remote is an unmanned aircraft or oil rig.

Safety is a key component of your job as Electro-Mechanical Technician, so you’re extra vigilant as you expertly maneuver the automated machines under your control. If you’ve ever seen a NOVA episode on television, then you’ve seen an unmanned submarine being lowered to ocean depths unsafe for humans. The person in control of that submarine is the Electro-Mechanical Technician.

In addition to guiding these mechanical machines, you also help design and build them. Working with a group of Engineers, you review blueprints and schematics, gather parts, and assemble pieces. Whether you’re working on a robot used by the military to defuse bombs or a machine that handles hazardous waste, precision is the key.

You use special equipment and tools to precisely measure and inspect each part. When all of the pieces are in their final position, you assist with the testing and performance evaluations. Once the product is released into the field, you continue your relationship as you monitor it in action, make repairs as needed, and perform required maintenance.
