EKG Technician

EKGs (electrocardiograms) are one of the many diagnostic tools used in medicine today. This machine provides a snapshot into the health and activity of the heart. As an EKG Technician, you operate the EKG machine.

Of course, as an EKG Technician you do a lot more than just operate the machine, but that’s a good start. EKG Technicians know all about the bells and whistles, displays, and printouts. You wouldn’t be very good at your job if you didn’t, would you?

Each patient is different. While some are there to receive a baseline reading for their Primary Care Physician, others are having symptoms that a Cardiologist believes might indicate a problem with the heart.

Either way, it’s your job to make sure the patient is comfortable and calm. So, you hone your bedside manner and explain the procedure before it begins. You answer the patient’s questions, offer reassurance, and keep the lines of communication open.

When your patient is calm and ready, you attach a series of electrodes to his or her arms, legs, and chest. Then you watch the machine and make adjustments as necessary. When you’ve gathered the information you need, you release the patient and prepare a report for the Doctor.

This is an important job. The results of the EKG can help diagnose potentially life-threatening conditions and provide information on the condition of the heart before and after surgery. It can help eliminate inaccurate diagnoses and provide pivotal information about how the heart is functioning.
